Miriam was a Hebrew midwife and former slave who lived during the time of the Exodus. She was eldest child of Amram and Yochabel, and, therefore, the older sister of Aaron and Moses. Miriam later married Hur Ben Caleb.
As a young girl Miriam followed her infant brother's basket of bullrushes floating among the reeds of the Nile as her mother did this to save Moses' from Pharaoh Ramses I edict of death to all Hebrew newborn male children. She also confronted Memnet and Bithiah (Pharaoh's daughter) and suggested her mother as a nurse for Moses
